Living Life - in Bohemia, Louisiana

The road to Bohemia is seemingly sparse.

Located about 50 miles Southeast of New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish, Bohemia lies on the East Bank of the Mississippi River, a short ferry ride from Point ala Hache.  (If the ferry was running, that is..)

Getting to Bohemia took some effort.  First I got stuck in traffic waiting for a train in the Bywater.

I thought I had the angle for this trip all planned out.  I thought I could make some connection about how the artist community in New Orleans keeps migrating further downriver – first it was the French Quarter, then the Marigny, currently the Bywater holds that distinction. I thought it only a matter of time before the artists make it down to Bohemia itself. Hahaha. I even brought Betty the Bullhorn along, the ultimate representative of La Vie Boheme, to further illustrate my point.

But as usual, the journey to Bohemia turned out to be much larger than that.  I discovered my roots on the way. While my Isleno ancestry, Spanish descendants from the Canary Islands, comes from a settlement called Valenzuela (now Belle Alliance) near Donaldsonville,  I thought I'd say hello to my peeps at this Isleno dwelling in St. Bernard Parish.

Then it was off to Bohemia.

It was a simple, yet difficult route – down Hwy 46 to Hwy 39, through Braithewaite and other areas in Plaquemines Parish that were affected by Hurricane Isaac last summer.  I didn’t photograph the miles of destruction I saw, but sights like this were not uncommon:

Houses on Levee

I drove past Phoenix.

And then continued on Hwy 39.

Finally, I reached Bohemia.

Bohemia, 2013

Bohemia is a small, unincorporated town of Plaquemines Parish. It was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The 25 or so homes here show their determination, resilience and spirit.  For me, Bohemia was a testament of commitment to living our truth, no matter the circumstances.

Bethlehem Lane

There are quite a few Katrina-related articles available online about Bohemia.  I had read that the only thing remaining of the brick Civil-War era Baptist chuch, Bethlehem Judea African Church, was its sign. Yet when I reached Bethlehem Lane, there was a new structure in its place.

Betty the Bullhorn, along for the ride as a Champion of Living Your Life – no matter how “unconventional” it may seem, was very much moved by the church and, wearing her peace sign outfit,  wanted to lend her support.

My World in Black & White: Out with the Old, In with the New

This week I listed quite a few prints on Etsy. www.nattieconcepts.etsy.com  It’s been  a while since I have done art markets on a regular basis, and last week I thought it was time to do some inventory and clear some space for more world travels and new works.  I didn’t realize what or how much that inventory would reveal.  For starters, I had much more stock than I realized.  My only intention was just to see what I had and then maybe try and do a market or two this holiday season.  But as I documented each print, I felt like I was reading a visual diary of my life over the past 6 years.

And Baton Rouge:

Crosscurrent(cy)   2006
I started doing art markets at the end of 2006.  This Walmart photo became my top market seller. I’d say it was for obvious reasons, but though I gave it my own slant with the title “Crosscurrent(cy)”, I always tell people that its up for open interpretation.  I’ve had people buy it for many reasons...

That Walmart photo, as it has come to be called, brought me to New York in 2006, when the Big Top Gallery here in NOLA was producing a show of New Orleans artists at the Brooklyn Lyceum.  That was a great weekend of photography for me. I spent my time wandering around and taking classic photos of iconic landmarks, shooting only one roll of my beloved 3200 speed film in the middle of a rainy day. The film choice and the weather gave amazing texture to these photos.  I feel like my photographic style was validated there.   I like to take timeless shots, because what we experience is just that.

When I did my first art market at the end of the year,  I displayed about 10 framed black & white 8x10 images, representing the world I saw.

I continued to photograph & print, mixing in lasting images of the environment around me with social commentary & splashes o' humor here & there.

The Audacity     2008

Eventually, I started making “PhotoSpaces”, the 10x20 triptychs that became a gallery of more documentation of the world around me.

Betty the Bullhorn added a nice touch to the art markets, she really found her niche there.  Now she has an Etsy shop of her own!

You Go Betty!    2008

I actually see no difference between my lumens, black and white prints, Betty the Bullhorn, the World Tour, or a Nattie tune.  To me, they all represent one moment of time that I wanted to preserve and ultimately, share.

Princess & Stars    2011

In 2011, as you know, I daydreamed, planned, and embarked on the World Tour, continuing into 2012. I also made lumen prints with feathers and stars.  I wrote songs, played gigs, in other words : I have lots more work to produce.  Now I am currently daydreaming about my next batch of snazzy new World Tour darkroom prints.  So to make room for said Snazzy New World Tour darkroom prints,
I'm letting go of the past - at really great prices, I might add  ;) - to make room for the now new.

The 5x7 and 8x10 images I have listed are printed and ready to bring joy and/or a chuckle to someones home, office, or business  :)  These images are open editions,  but now is the time to get the handmade darkroom prints at these - did I mention - really great prices.  It's store of like a Nattie Concepts Clearance Sale.  (Cute!  I should put that on my site..)
Feel free to take a look and browse through my world in black and white.  And as always, feel free to share...there's more to come...

On My Way to China La., Ended Up in (the) - Vatican, Louisiana

That sounds about right....Just when I had a plan, everything changed.  Sounds a lot like 6 years ago..in fact,  I think I will use that  from now on  in describing my Katrina experience.  Its an inevitable question -  "What was Katrina like for you?"  From now on I will say, "Well, it was a lot like planning a trip to China, only to find yourself in (the) Vatican..."  I would go on to say it was, and is,  about finding the balance between the two polar opposites.  So it's appropriate that I would find myself in (the) Vatican on the weekend of the Katrina anniversary.

My journey took a different direction when I headed towards (the) Vatican.  But I put my faith into believing that whatever path I chose was the right one for me.
Vatican Trinity
There were signs along the way to let me know I was on course, such as the house with the Jesus and Mary statues...

And the street signs.  If I ever started to doubt myself, I just had to look no further than the street signs to regroup and get my bearings.

Pope Drive and Vatican Road

It's a different world out there in Vatican, Louisiana, but I soon got accustomed to my surroundings, and though things seemed strange, I began to recognize how much is really the same, wherever ya are.

Vatican wasn't originally part of my trip, but I appreciate that it has become part of my experience.  I don't know where I'm headed next, but lines get crossed and plans get changed, so I know that wherever I end up is where I need to be...
